In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us the parable of the workers in the vineyard. Some workers begin early in the morning, while others are hired later in the day. Yet, when it is time to receive their payment, everyone receives the same amount. The workers who arrived first become upset. They believe they deserve more because they worked longer. But the landowner reminds them that he has not treated them unfairly. Instead, he has chosen to be generous.

In today's Gospel, we learn firsthand that forgiveness is not an option, but a mandate from the Lord. To hold contempt is sinful, even if it may seem justified.

Jesus says that if we hold contempt, judgment falls on us. Forgive seven times seven times. We are also reminded not to present ourselves for Holy Communion if we hold contempt in our heart. If we do, we bring judgment upon ourselves.

In today’s Gospel, Peter asks Jesus how many times he must forgive someone who sins against him. Jesus answers, “Not seven times but seventy-seven times.” Through the parable of the unforgiving servant, Jesus reminds us that God’s mercy toward us is far greater than anything we could ever earn.

We are reminded in the Gospel of Mathew that prayer is central to the Christian life. Jesus said that whenever two or more are gathered in His name, our Father in heaven is in their midst.

This matters on many levels of the Christian life: to allow God to be in our midst, here and now, present to us.

Matthew 18:15–20 In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us an important lesson about how we should treat one another when conflicts or misunderstandings arise. He tells us not to ignore problems or speak about others behind their backs, but to approach one another directly, privately, and with love. Christian correction is not about judging or humiliating someone. It is about helping one another return to the right path and protecting the unity of the community.
