Forgive Your Brother From Your Heart
by Fr. Michael D. Accinni Reinhardt, MA, Mdiv, MS | 09/13/2026 | Pastoral CornerIn today's Gospel, we learn firsthand that forgiveness is not an option, but a mandate from the Lord. To hold contempt is sinful, even if it may seem justified.
Jesus says that if we hold contempt, judgment falls on us. Forgive seven times seven times. We are also reminded not to present ourselves for Holy Communion if we hold contempt in our heart. If we do, we bring judgment upon ourselves.
Forgiveness means dropping any animosity or ill feelings toward someone who caused harm. I know we can't be like Leanne Womack's country hit and sing, "I just hate her; I'll think of a reason later." That is a dangerous place to be, if God live ya, cause I don't!
We cannot hold resentment in our heart. We might find ourselves in a world of hurt when we've been betrayed, disrespected, lied to, or cheated on, but at the end of the day, the Christian is called to forgive, let it go, and move on. Some of the loneliest people in the world are married; besides, couples have forgotten how to nurture their marriage, and a major problem is a lack of forgiveness.
The first step in any conflict resolution is forgiveness. We must empty ourselves of ill feelings or ill will, and to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect.
We must never put our soul in danger, and at times, after a good confession, spiritually place the person with whom we struggle in the Precious Blood of Jesus, and let Jesus do the work in their lives.
Peace.
