Listen and Heed

by Fr. Michael D. Accinni Reinhardt, MA, Mdiv, MS  |  10/11/2026  |  Pastoral Corner

Today’s Gospel affirms for us God’s bountiful generosity. We know this is true because Scripture says that many are called but few are chosen. Ordinary Time continues to unfold for us the reality of God’s abundance, but receiving all He has to offer makes the greatest difference in the world. The great differentiation is for the faithful to actually heed what the Lord is saying, to actually put into practice living the Ten Commandments, being well rooted in the sacramental life by frequent confession and reception of Holy Communion.

It’s important to be humble and have a repentant heart so God can do the work He wants to do in us. Moving toward holiness again is not just lip service, like what the Pharisees do; it requires dedication and commitment on our part.

Lately, Jesus has been changing things up by not focusing on those on the fringes, because when they hear the Word of God, they tremble in awe, overwhelmed by the great works God can accomplish in the conversion of souls.

Jesus is always after the lost, but He also pursues the strong. Don’t get too comfortable thinking you’ve arrived, but stay steadfast in humility, and never forget how the Lord can work in your life and move you more deeply toward holiness. This is why He states many are called, but few are chosen, because the longest distance in the Christian life reflects the genuineness of our conversion versus simply going through the motions. Obviously, this is a problem amongst the faithful, regarding a lack of spiritual authenticity, because it’s our third Sunday with much of the same message.

The chosen are the willing, and Jesus, as good as he was and is, can only work with the willing. When we are willing, we see and hear things much differently because we awaken to the receptive work that happens to us simply by responding to the Word of God. I’d imagine it is quite disappointing to the Lord when his faithful body misses the mark and fails to live up to the Christian potential they are called to live.

There’s nothing worse than a Christian behaving badly, because of the effects of sin that they bring into the community. It’s like a cancer of decay, rotting away the spiritual body of Christ in his Church. This is why he gives such a stark warning. This is why the Christian must be clothed in holy attire at all times, never forgetting the dignity from which they have been baptized. Many are called, and few are chosen, because there is a great difference between simply stating things with their mouth; it’s another thing to live it and practice it.

Grace and Peace.

Escuchar y Atender

Gracia y paz.
