Dear Parish Family,

Something wonderful occurs as the minutes of light grow in number during the month of February. Our days become a little longer, brighter, and in Arizona a little warmer with the return of the sun. It's a bit of a miracle really to begin witnessing nature awakening from her deep winter slumber. Arizona is privy to literally front row seats, as the deserts will soon burst into color as the sun calls the wildflowers to bloom. It's supposed to be a great spectacle this year with the winter rain that fell. One thing we learn from nature is if we do not have light, we die.

Jesus in the Gospel will not let the light die nor be extinguished, as he calls us to be salt and light, two products of nature that are the catalysts of change, and transformation. The question now is how we might live out this reality of being salt and light. We have just celebrated Candlemas as a testament to the light of Christ, we have fully closed out the season of light from which we bring with us the light of God that was given to us in baptism and now are challenged with the task of keeping it burning brightly. How might we keep the light burning brightly when there are horrible things happening in the world?

How may we keep the light burning brightly when we ourselves suffer in doubt, fear, or stunted growth because we choose to remain stuck? We maintain those echo chambers around us that feed our doubts and fears, while feeding our egos and sinful nature. We moan and groan about the same stuff to the same people every day, but do not change the one thing we can, ourselves.

We become complicit and complacent and stuck in our sin. Remember Lucifer's Pride is a spiritual eclipse that keeps us in darkness. We often are stuck in our indifference, lack of willingness, entitlement, control, and shut out the light of God that must always illuminate our hearts. Jesus calls us out of darkness to change, some go but go kicking and screaming, while others go in total surrender, and some do not go at all. Jesus brings the light to us, but it is only in our willingness that we reap its full benefit. Jesus worked with the willing.

How might we best be the light in the darkness, are we part of the solution or the problem? Some choose not to hit the darkness head on, to dare try to pierce the darkness, they do not live the sacramental life genuinely, fail to confess their sins to a priest, but still go through the motions.

We must never get in the way of the light; it can never be eclipsed from us because it is then that we move in darkness and stumble. It's then become lost. As the days grow longer with the coming light, let us accompany nature, as heaven and nature sings, by rejoicing in its return. God's redemptive work is here, let us purposefully stand in God's radiant beams.

Algo maravilloso ocurre a medida que aumentan los minutos de luz durante el mes de febrero. Nuestros días se vuelven un poco más largos, más luminosos y, en Arizona, un poco más cálidos con el regreso del sol. Es un verdadero milagro presenciar el despertar de la naturaleza de su profundo letargo invernal. Arizona tiene el privilegio de ser testigo de primera mano, ya que los desiertos pronto estallarán en color cuando el sol llame a las flores silvestres a florecer. Se espera un gran espectáculo este año gracias a las lluvias invernales. Una cosa que aprendemos de la naturaleza es que si no tenemos luz, morimos.

Jesús, en el Evangelio, no permitirá que la luz muera ni se extinga, ya que nos llama a ser sal y luz, dos elementos de la naturaleza que son catalizadores del cambio y la transformación. La pregunta ahora es cómo podemos vivir esta realidad de ser sal y luz. Acabamos de celebrar la Candelaria como testimonio de la luz de Cristo; hemos concluido la temporada de la luz, de la cual llevamos con nosotros la luz de Dios que se nos dio en el bautismo, y ahora tenemos el desafio de mantenerla brillando intensamente. ¿Cómo podemos mantener la luz brillando intensamente cuando suceden cosas horribles en el mundo? ¿Cómo podemos mantener la luz brillando intensamente cuando nosotros mismos sufrimos dudas, miedos o un crecimiento estancado porque elegimos permanecer inmovilizados?

Mantenemos esas cámaras de eco a nuestro alrededor que alimentan nuestras dudas y miedos, mientras alimentan nuestro ego y nuestra naturaleza pecaminosa. Nos quejamos y lamentamos de las mismas cosas con las mismas personas todos los días, pero no cambiamos lo único que podemos cambiar: nosotros mismos. Nos volvemos cómplices, complacientes y atrapados en nuestro pecado. Recordemos que el orgullo de Lucifer es un eclipse espiritual que nos mantiene en la oscuridad. A menudo estamos atrapados en nuestra indiferencia, falta de voluntad, sentido de derecho, control, y cerramos la puerta a la luz de Dios que siempre debe iluminar nuestros corazones.

Jesús nos llama a salir de la oscuridad para cambiar; algunos van a regañadientes, mientras que otros van con total entrega, y algunos no van en absoluto. Jesús nos trae la luz, pero solo en nuestra disposición cosechamos todos sus beneficios. Jesús trabajó con los que estaban dispuestos. ¿Cómo podemos ser mejor la luz en la oscuridad? ¿Somos parte de la solución o del problema? Algunos eligen no enfrentarse directamente a la oscuridad, no se atreven a intentar disiparla, no viven la vida sacramental con autenticidad, no confiesan sus pecados a un sacerdote, pero aun así cumplen con las formalidades.

Nunca debemos interponernos en el camino de la luz; nunca debe ser eclipsada para nosotros, porque es entonces cuando caminamos en la oscuridad y tropezamos. Es entonces cuando nos perdemos.

A medida que los días se alargan con la llegada de la luz, acompañemos a la naturaleza, mientras el cielo y la naturaleza cantan, regocijándonos en su regreso. La obra redentora de Dios está aquí; permanezcamos con propósito en los radiantes rayos de Dios.
