Dear Parish Family,

In this season of celebrating the coming of the Light of God to all nations, we realize the message from Sacred Scripture is not just for the people in the days of Jesus, but for today as well.

The news of the death of John the Baptist saddened Jesus, but prompted him to retreat, and see that the prophecy from Isaiah be fulfilled. John the Baptist was martyred for the sake of the Light, God Himself. Jesus like John was drawn to the mission of God, the very reason He who is God came into the world.

"Jesus withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled: Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, / the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, / Galilee of the Gentiles, / the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, / on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death/ light has arisen. From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.'" Jesus then begins to seek out who would be his apostles.

The beauty here is the zeal for which these early followers of Jesus lived and believed in the coming Messiah, and that his coming was soon, and the urgency of repentance real.

What is it about the resentful heart that is so urgent. It is our willingness to see that our redemption is at hand, and our response to Jesus the crux of our desire to attain redemption.

As the earliest disciples of Jesus began to follow him, they were so inspired and convinced of this urgency of salvation, that their priorities were set for heaven. Their priorities centered on the moment, and somehow managing to live heaven now. They were focused on the love of God, unity, and belonging to the body of Christ. The best rendition of this aspect of the Christian life reveals exactly who Christians are and how they are to live.

The famous Catholic Hymn Where Charity and Love Prevail, speaks volumes at how we respond to the love of God's Light in the world.

Where charity and love prevail, there God is ever found;
Brought here together by Christ's love, by love are we thus bound.
With grateful joy and holy fear God's charity we learn;
Let us with heart and mind and soul now love God in return.
Forgive we now each other's faults as we our faults confess;
And let us love each other well in Christian holiness.
Let strife among us be unknown, let all contention cease;
Be God's the glory that we seek, be ours God's holy peace.
Let us recall that in our midst dwells God's begotten Son;
As members of his body joined, we are in Christ made one.
No race or creed can love exclude, if honored be God's name;
Our family embraces all whose Father is the same

It's a call to action, just like Jesus as he went to Capernaum, and began to form his band of believers. Jesus who is Light testifies to the Light who is the Father in Heaven. He who was drawn from the west in Nazareth rose toward the east in Capernaum like the rising sun, bringing the love of God's wonderful light in the darkness. How does the Light of God live in us, how did it live in John the Baptist or Jesus himself, it's the message of unwavering truth that calls us out of sin through repentance and into the light of forgiveness and redemption. We shouldn't commit sins of disunity as the body of Christ. Our shepherds must guide us in truth of respecting our diversity of believers, and our believers must be willing to die to self in order that charity and love prevail even in the face of adversity. There is nothing worse than the scandal misrepresentation, from which John the Baptist was beheaded and Jesus crucified, though necessary, their mark of sacrifice has changed everything for us toward charity and love.

Donde Prevalecen La Caridad Y El Amor

Querida familia parroquial,

En esta época de celebración de la llegada de la Luz de Dios a todas las naciones, nos damos cuenta de que el mensaje de la Sagrada Escritura no es solo para la gente de los tiempos de Jesús, sino también para hoy.

La noticia de la muerte de Juan el Bautista entristeció a Jesús, pero lo impulsó a retirarse y a ver que se cumpliera la profecía de Isaías. Juan el Bautista fue martirizado por causa de la Luz, Dios mismo. Jesús, al igual que Juan, se sintió atraído por la misión de Dios, la razón misma por la que Él, que es Dios, vino al mundo.

"Jesús se retiró a Galilea. Dejó Nazaret y se fue a vivir a Cafarnaúm, junto al mar, en la región de Zabulón y Neftalí, para que se cumpliera lo dicho por el profeta Isaías: Tierra de Zabulón y tierra de Neftalí, / camino del mar, al otro lado del Jordán, / Galilea de los gentiles, / el pueblo que habitaba en tinieblas vio una gran luz, / sobre los que moraban en región de sombra de muerte / resplandeció la luz. Desde entonces, Jesús comenzó a predicar y a decir: 'Arrepiéntanse, porque el reino de los cielos está cerca'. Jesús entonces comienza a buscar a quienes serían sus apóstoles.

La belleza reside en el celo con el que estos primeros seguidores de Jesús vivieron y creyeron en el Mesías venidero, en que su venida era inminente y en la urgencia del arrepentimiento.

¿Qué tiene de tan urgente el corazón resentido? Es nuestra disposición a comprender que nuestra redención está cerca, y nuestra respuesta a Jesús es la clave de nuestro deseo de alcanzar la redención.

Cuando los primeros discípulos de Jesús comenzaron a seguirlo, estaban tan inspirados y convencidos de esta urgencia de salvación, que sus prioridades se centraron en el cielo. Sus prioridades se centraban en el momento presente y en vivir de alguna manera el cielo aquí y ahora. Estaban enfocados en el amor de Dios, la unidad y la pertenencia al cuerpo de Cristo. La mejor representación de este aspecto de la vida cristiana revela exactamente quiénes son los cristianos y cómo deben vivir.

El famoso himno católico «Donde reina la caridad y el amor» habla elocuentemente de cómo respondemos al amor de la Luz de Dios en el mundo.

Donde reina la caridad y el amor, allí siempre se encuentra Dios; Reunidos aquí por el amor de Cristo, por el amor estamos unidos.

Con gozo agradecido y santo temor aprendemos la caridad de Dios;
Amemos ahora a Dios con todo nuestro corazon, mente y alma.
Perdonemos ahora las faltas de los demas, como confesamos las nuestras;
Y amemonos bien unos a otros en santidad cristiana.
Que la discordia sea desconocida entre nosotros, que cese toda contienda;
Sea de Dios la gloria que buscamos, sea nuestra la santa paz de Dios.
Recordemos que en medio de nosotros habita el Hijo unigénito de Dios;
Como miembros de su cuerpo unidos, en Cristo somos uno.
Ninguna raza ni credo puede excluir el amor, si se honra el nombre de Dios;
Nuestra familia abraza a todos cuyo Padre es el mismo.

Es un llamado a la acción, tal como Jesús cuando fue a Cafarnaúm y comenzó a formar su grupo de creyentes. Jesús, que es la Luz, da testimonio de la Luz que es el Padre en el Cielo. Él, que fue atraído desde el oeste en Nazaret, se elevó hacia el este en Cafarnaúm como el sol naciente, trayendo el amor de la maravillosa luz de Dios en la oscuridad. ¿Cómo vive la Luz de Dios en nosotros? ¿Cómo vivió en Juan el Bautista o en el mismo Jesús? Es el mensaje de verdad inquebrantable que nos llama a salir del pecado a través del arrepentimiento y a la luz del perdón y la redención. No debemos cometer pecados de desunión como cuerpo de Cristo. Nuestros pastores deben guiarnos en la verdad de respetar nuestra diversidad de creyentes, y nuestros creyentes deben estar dispuestos a morir a sí mismos para que la caridad y el amor prevalezcan incluso ante la adversidad. No hay nada peor que el escándalo de la tergiversación, por el cual Juan el Bautista fue decapitado y Jesús crucificado; aunque necesario, su sacrificio lo ha cambiado todo para nosotros, llevandonos hacia la caridad y el amor.

En la caridad y el amor permanecemos, Se la Luz.
